The scenario designed in the 2020 and 2021 years and which raised energy bills has made the large industrial consumers of the Free Market look for other alternatives. Entrepreneurs represent 35% of consumption in Brazil and seek protection from the volatility of spot prices and charges generated by the ONS security dispatch.
One of the most suitable models for solving these challenges is self-production.
In general terms, the self-producer is the consumer who invests in energy generation to supply his own business totally or partially. In this way, the entrepreneur can have more predictability of their costs and charges and thus carry out their financial planning with greater security.
According to Karine Casali, Head of Origination at Mercurio Comercializadora, the models that enable self-production are currently numerous. “The market can carry out self-production through consortia between consumers and traders, financing from private investors or from the capital market”, he exemplifies.
The most popular self-production models that are expected to start operating between 2022 and 2023 make use of renewable energy sources. Furthermore, Brazil is still fertile soil for numerous other sources if we consider the availability of natural gas, extraction of raw materials or residues from the production chain, such as garbage.
